TITLE: Counter Normative Identities in Contemporary Japan and the Business of Emotions

ABSTRACT: In this talk I will discuss the case of different female born individuals whose life experiences develop outside heteronormative binaries in contemporary Japan. I will address their representation in Japanese media and the business of commodified intimacy (gijiren’ai) in which they are involved. Specifically, I will firstly discuss the phenomenon of dansō (男装) and the entertainment world related to them. Particular attention will be given to the world of dansō escorting, the focus of my main research line. Then, I will also share and discuss the preliminary results of my new ethnographic project focused on female providers of sexual intimacy for women.

GIS students will also have the privilege to speak with Dr. Fanasca in person before the talk (6/28 15:30-16:30). This is a great opportunity for you to casually chat with a leading researcher in their field. We will have a free discussion about her research interests, her career, her experience as a global researcher and more. This roundtable is open to GIS students only. Please register in advance to reserve your seat!
We look forward to seeing you at our events!

Best regards,
Yu Niiya
